Heartbeam Safety Lock

Cylindrical Lockset

Classroom locks have historically been used to protect school property from burglary and vandalism. Now, they’re used to protect students from intruders. Yet lock designs haven’t updated to meet their new function. We’ve redesigned the classroom lock that rises to the challenge.

What is a school emergency lockdown system?

A school emergency lockdown system is a system of protection that usually combines security products with pre-determined processes that help school attendees shelter in place safely. Lockdown systems are typically used in case of a severe weather emergency or in the case of an intruder.

Some systems are designed to secure the entire building as quickly as possible. The result is the universal lockdown feature, which allows faculty to lock all the doors in a facility from a central location.

Other systems may strive to secure doorways with ease and affordability in mind, which is why some schools use a door barricade to brace the door against an intruder quickly.

How School lockdown systems can fall short

School lockdown systems fall short when a school’s environment isn’t taken into consideration. As a result, a lockdown system can actually be devastating for a school.

If schools allow students into the hallway, then a faculty member initiating a universal lockdown could unknowingly be locking those students outside of their classroom.

Door barricades present another risk. With no way to bypass a door barricade, students can lock out teachers and other faculty with no way in. The fact that door barricades don’t offer single-motion egress also poses fire safety risks.

It remains clear that a strong lockdown system helps support decision-makers at schools instead of providing an oversimplified solution.

A breakthrough in school safety door locks

Oak’s Heartbeam Safety Lock takes a different approach. The HeartBeam Lock focuses less on providing a quick fix and more on informing and equipping each person involved in locking down the school.

For students and teachers in the classroom, they can easily lock the door with the thumbturn, receiving a calming flash from the handle to tell them their room is secure.

With the combined use of our AlertLink Board, faculty are informed when a classroom goes into lockdown, allowing them to decide between checking on the classroom or initiating emergency lockdown procedures.
